The HYPE program aims to inspire and prepare the next generation of health care professionals
This summer, students from our Hawthorne Academy of Health Sciences, part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Healthcare Education Initiative, got a head start on their future healthcare careers by participating in a version of Atrium Health’s HYPE Summer Academy.
This program, hosted at The Pearl Innovation District, is designed to inspire and prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals by exposing them to healthcare pathways and innovation.
An Immersive Healthcare Experience
The HYPE (Healthcare Youth Pathways to Employment) Summer Academy is an intensive, three-week program that gives students a realistic and engaging look into the world of healthcare. Our scholars dedicated 21 hours a week to the experience, which included:
Immersive Facility Visits: Students were able to step into the day-to-day activities at The Pearl Innovation District, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Metro School, LifeShare, Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital, Carolinas Simulation Center, OneBlood, and Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute.
Professional Development: The program featured interactive learning sessions, simulations, and activities to build the skills needed for a successful career.
Community Engagement: Students participated in a blood donation event, a hospital volunteer project, and facilitated leadership development panels with local leaders.
In recognition of their commitment and to compensate for missed summer work opportunities, each participating student received a $2,000 stipend funded by the Bloomberg Philanthropies Healthcare Education Initiative grant.
Building Our Future Workforce
This program at Hawthorne is only one powerful example of how Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Atrium Health, part of Advocate Health, collaborate to create direct pathways for our students to high-demand careers. We are incredibly proud of our Hawthorne scholars for their dedication this summer.
Congratulations to all the students who successfully completed this formative program!
